Construction Jobs Rebound From Pandemic Lows
Nationwide construction employment is bouncing back from the worst of the pandemic. And the Dallas-Fort Worth area is adding more construction sector jobs, too.
Construction employment rose in all but a few U.S. metro areas in May compared with April, according to the latest survey by the Associated General Contractors of America.
D-FW construction jobs increased by an estimated 1,200 jobs in May from the previous month. North Texas led the country in construction job growth in March, adding 10,000 building jobs before the pandemic hit.
The greatest building sector employment gains in May were in Seattle (28,600) and New York City (25,000.) The Houston area added 8,100 jobs.
Dallas-area construction employment at the end of May was up 3,200 jobs from a year earlier. And in the Fort Worth area, there were 4,600 fewer jobs than in May 2019.
Associated General Contractors’ chief economist Ken Simonson said that construction employment expanded in most parts of the country between April and May as coronavirus lockdowns began to ease. “The construction industry lost nearly 1 million jobs in April,” Simonson said. “Construction employment has begun to bounce back in many parts of the country.”
